Bone china is a delicate paste made of clay minerals and bone ash. Bone china was originally developed in East London in the mid 18th century by a potter named Thomas Frye. Later, the potter Josiah Spode improved upon the process with a formulation that was 6 parts bone ash, 4 parts china stone and 3.5 parts Kaolinite, a mineral known as “china clay".
